Effect of Anesthesia Techniques on Oxidant and Antioxidant Indices after Inguinal Hernia operation among Elderly Patients

Objective: The effects of anesthesia thechniques and drugs on different body systems and organs, especially immune system in elderly patients who underwent operation, have always been investigated by investigators The aim of this study was to compare the effects of general anesthesia with isoflurane or spinal anesthesia with lidocaine on oxidative and antioxidant indices. Materials & Methods: In this study, double-blind randomized clinical trial with parallel design was performed on elderly patients who underwent operation between 2018 and 2019. Patients were randomly divided into two groups (n = 35). In the first group patients received isoflurane gas and in the other group received lidocaine spinal anesthesia. Study sampling was performed in two stages; one day before (control sample) and one day after operation. In this study, AGEs, AOPP, MDA, LDL, FRAP, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase were measured. Results: In this study and among patients of isoflorane group pre and postoperative measurement of Advanced Glycation End Products, Malonaldehyde, oxidized LDL, Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma, Catalase, Glutathione Peroxidase and Superoxide Dismutase had significant difference. For patients in the lidocaine group, this difference was observed for the indices including Malonaldehyde, oxidized LDL, Catalase and Superoxide Dismutase. Conclusion: With regards to positive effects of anesthetic gases such as isflorane on oxidative and antioxidant indices in elderly patients,  these results should be considered in the selection of anesthesia methods and drugs for the elderly patient underwent operation.
